Fibrosing alveolitis. X-ray of the chest of an 82-year-old man with fibrosing alveolitis. Also known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, this is a condition where the lung's alveoli gradually thicken and scar due to chronic, progressive inflammation. This is sometimes due to an autoimmune disorder such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. This scarring is seen as a general cloudiness. Also seen are the ribs, heart and collar bones.
