Buda Castle is located on a prominent hill called Castle Hill, overlooking the River Danube in the Buda area of Budapest. The castle area is surrounded by the touristic area known as Várnegyed (Castle Quarter). The first historical castle and palace complex was first completed in 1265. Later significant expansion occurred between 1749 and 1769. The complex has historically been referred to as either the Royal Palace or the Royal Castle.
