Almannagjá (Everyman's Gorge) Rift at Thingvellir, Blaskogabyggd in southwestern Iceland, near the peninsula of Reykjanes and the Hengill volcanic area. Thingvellir National Park is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. It is the site of a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The land has subsided by about 40 metres over the past 10,000 years. Over the same period, the tectonic plates which meet here have diverged by as much as 70 metres.
