MS., was compiled in 1829 by Mr, Alexander Mackay, , ofBlackcastle, from family papers entrusted to him for the purpose by Eric,seventh Lord Reay, and among these documents was a genealogicalaccount of the Mackays in ms. going back to early times. In the Book ofMackay, at pp. 15-20, the writer of this article states his reasons foraccepting this genealogical account in preference to that given in Hist, ofEarld. of Suthr., from which it slightly differs at the start. 157. 158 MAOKAY, LORD REAY Mackay family is said to have descended from MalcolmMacEth, first Earl of Ross; and as the said Malcolm wasa son or brother of Angus MacEth, Mormaer of Moray, slainin 1130, it is by this link probably that the Mackays areconnected with the Forbeses, for in the twelfth centurythe former had possessions in Moray and Buchan, thoughat a somewhat later date they are found settled in Strath-naver, Sutherland. It has also to be remembered that MacEth or MacAedis the old form of the Gaelic MacAoidh, now Mackay, andthat King Malcolm iv. transported the Moray adherents ofMacEth extramontanas Scocise about 1160, for prolongedrebellion against his house.^ As Ross was then part ofthe old province of Moray, over the mountains would meaninto Sutherland.
