A restored Dorset Red Post. This red finger signpost is located on the B3145 between Wincanton and Sherborne, Dorset, England

A red signpost marks the crossroads on the B3145 Sherborne to Wincanton Road, where the old coach road to Bath forks off for Corton Denham. There are various theories about why these posts are red instead of white. Possibly they marked the route the first convicts took to Dorchester before leaving to be transported to Botany Bay in Australia, or they marked the site of a gibbet. There are three red posts in Dorset, this one in the parish of Poyntington has just been restored (May 2016). They are maintained by Dorset County Council.
