Sometimes a singularly ingenious net isused, which has neither float nor net is about four feet wide, thirty orforty feet in length, and is tied at each endto a stout stick. Ropes are lashed to thestick, and the net is then taken out to sea ina canoe. When they have arrived at a con-venient spot, the natives throw the net overthe side of the canoe, holding the ropesat either end of the boat, so that the netforms a large semicircle in the water as theboat drifts along. In fact it is managedmuch as an English fisherman manages hisdredge. In the middle of the canoe is posted aman, who bears in his hand a very long andlight pole, having a tuft of feathers tied toone end of it. With the tufted end he beatsand stirs the water, thus driving into themeshes of the net all the small fishes withinthe curve of the net. Those who
