That cholesteato-ma may appear as a true new growth in the middleear, has been lately fully established on dissection byLucae/ as he found with the growth neither inflamma-tion of the tympanum nor perforation of the mem-brana tympani. ^ R. Volkmann, Knochenkrankheiten, S. 487, places the cholesteatomamidway between cancroid and Circumscribed Atrophy of the Sulcus Transver-sus from cholesteotnma, with erosion of the sinus(otorrhagia). The opening into the sulcus meas-ures 11 mm. in length and 5-6 mm. in breadth, and has perfectly smooth edges. 24 PATHOLOGY OF THE EAR. In the great majority of cases of so-called choles-teatoma in the temporal bone, we are dealing withnothing more than a retention of inflammatoryproducts, the result of suppurative processes (VonTroeltsch). A collection of concentric layers of epi-dermis cells and. occasional masses of cholesterinecrystals form around a nucleus of fatty and caseouspus; the connective tissue capsule is wholly cause of these collections is purulent catarrh ofthe middle ear, with polypoid granulations and per-foration of the membrana tympani. Such collections are found in the natural cavities, most frequent-ly in the an-tru
