The number of diarrhoea cases increased across the country in recent weeks due to the rising ambient temperature and shortage of pure drinking water, physicians said. They said gas and power supply crises only worsened the situation as people in many places were unable to boil drinking water. The doctors of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research in Bangladesh, said on an average about 350 patients took admission every day over the last 15 days. Over 400 diarrhoea patients took admission in the last 24 hours as the ambient temperature rose further, the centre’s scientist and head of special care unit Pradip K Bardhan said on Sunday. He said the incidence of diarrhoea would come down with the fall in temperature. According to ICDDR,B health control room about 50,000 diarrhoea patients were admitted to hospitals in last one month. ICDDR,B doctors said 370 patients were admitted at its hospital in Dhaka on Saturday, 354 patients on Friday, 361 on Thursday and 364 on Wednesday. They said that 217 patients took admission until 2 PM on Sunday. ‘It is not an unusual scenario around this time,’ said Pradip. ICDDR,B experts said that the number of patients went up each day also due to inadequate water supply from Dhaka WASA.
