Although we were in France, little differenceeither in the people, costumes or architecture could benoted, so mingled here were the characteristics of theFrench and the Belgians. The sun was well up andgleamed hotly upon the old roof tops of the town, oldmany of them in Shakespeares day, and flooded withgolden light the quaint market place, now filled withswarming peasants. There were great heaps of flowershere and there, among the booths containing variedmerchandise, and some of the market people were takingtheir morning bowls of hot cafe au lait, made fresh in 17 VANISHED HALLS OF FRANCE green and yellow earthenware biggins, over small ironbraziers containing burning charcoal.
