When the Nyriragongo volcano erupted on 18th Jan 2002 lava flowed into Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo, destroying one third of the town and killing 45 people. The 3,469-metre Nyiragongo volcano is one of eight scattered along the borders of Rwanda, Congo and Uganda, and is only about 10 kilometres from Camp, Bukavu, on the site of a former Peace Corps traing centre, for people displaced from Goma by the lava flow following volcanic eruption, Jan 2002 Veronica Kibonge, 20, with her daughter, Florence, 1 year old. "The lava flow in Goma did not destroy our home but a group of thieves came and took everything and i was afraid. Everyone was running to Rwanda. I could not wait for my husband. To save my life I ran with the crowd to Rwanda. It is a problem living without my husband. I have sent messages to Goma. I want to go back when everything is right there again."
