Frank Hastings Hamilton (1813-1886), US surgeon. Hastings was awarded his medical degree (MD) at the University of Pennsylvania in 1835. After being appointed professor at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, he served as military surgeon for the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865), being made lieutenant colonel and medical inspector of the army in 1863. He was consulting and visiting surgeon to numerous hospitals, and invented several devices and procedures used to treat bone fractures. His major publications on surgery include 'Practical Treatise on Military Surgery' (1861) and 'The Principles and Practice of Surgery' (1872).
