This is one of the most abundant species in thetide waters of the middle states, but I found it com-paratively rare in the Potomac and James rivers. Invarieties of form it much resembles U. crassus, andboth male and female are represented, in order toconvey a clear idea of sexual differences, which areso striking in a large proportion of the species. Itis very often destitute of rays, and I have seen onlyone specimen in which the rays extended over thedisk to the anterior margin. 0>. /:!. |
