L’entrée de la Prison de la Conciergerie

The view taken in 1828, shows the Chapelle de laPrison de la Conciergerie and l’entrée de la Prison. It was an ancient prison since the Palais de Justice was a royal residence. In 1391 some inhabitants of Nevers were confined here and in the 15th century the Bishop of Constance and the Constable of France were murdered here. Marie Antoinette was confined here and later the area was made into a chapel. Princess Elizabeth sister of King Louis XVI was confined here. Later Robespierre, Condorcet, Malasherbes, Lavoisier, and Lavalette were also confined here. There is a picture of Marie Antoinette by Simon another by Pajou showing the forced separation of the family. There is another by Drolling of Princess Elizabeth. The image was drawn by T T Bury under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by B Winkles
