Shoulder muscles. Computer artwork of the shoulder joint showing bones (cream), nerves (yellow) and muscles (pink). The large triangular muscle is the subscapularis muscle. This muscle attaches to the scapula (shoulder blade) to the humerus (upper arm bone). It acts to medially rotate the head of the humerus and to move the humerus forward and downwards when the arm is raised. The lower band of muscle is the teres major muscle. It acts to medially rotate the head of the humerus and to move the humerus downwards and backwards when the arm is raised. Both muscles are innervated by the lower subscapular nerve (thin yellow lines). The subscapularis is also innervated by the upper subscapular nerve.
