The firing on theflag at Sumter suddenly converted Mr. Ely from * ^ silvergray conservatism to anti-slavery principles. He was one of the subscribers who devoted $1,000 eachto the building of the third railroad in the State, thatbetween Marietta and Loveland. He was made an officerof the Board of Directors, and continued as such untilthe completion of the line in 1858, editing his Gazettemost of the time, and serving as Receiver of PublicMoneys at Chillicothe for four years. He pursued con-siderable geological investigation in Southern Ohio asdivertisement
