The Japanese Imperial family appear on the balcony of the Imperial palace to greet the public below, to welcome the New Year of 2007, in Tokyo, Japan, on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007. The line up included Prince And Princess Hitachi, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, Crown Prince Naruhito and his wife Crown Princess Masako, Prince Akishino and his wife Princess Kiko, Prince and Princess Mikasano. 40,000 well-wishers entered the East Palace Gardens to greet the Imperial family who appear on the Palace's Chowa-Den wing balcony. Accompanied by his siblings and his children and their wives the Emperor waved and said "I wish for the happiness of people in our country and peace in the world". This appearance by the Imperial family is one of two opportunities the Japanese public have to greet them, the other being the Emperor's birthday 23rd, December.
