Sunflower. Blooming sunflower (Helianthus sp.). Sunflowers are grown for their striking flowers and commercially for their seeds and oil. The plants can grow up to 3 metres tall. The oil is used widely in cooking and industry as a base for soaps and candles. The seeds are used as food by humans and animals. The large flower is actually a compound of many smaller flowers (florets), which form the inner portion, as well as the yellow petals. The plant is famous for its ability to follow the sun. This is caused by the increased growth of the side of the stem in the shade, due to accumulation of the plant growth chemical auxin in these areas.
