Ancient gravestone of the Bayonne Jewish cemetery. This Jewish cemetery is considered to be the oldest and the biggest one in France. Erected in the XVII th century - after the massive influx of Jewes (Marrannes or Marranes) chased away from Spain in 1492 - it spreads out over two hectares and contains 3,000 graves. Le cimetière israélite de Bayonne est considéré comme le plus ancien et le plus grand cimetière juif de France. Il s'étale sur deux hectares, contient 3000 tombes et fut érigé au 17e siècle, après une arrivée massive de juifs (marranes) dans la région.
