The railway station at Grays, Essex, England, UK c. 1910. Waiting at the station is a London, Tilbury and Southend Railway train headed east, destined for Gravesend. The tank engine at the front is locomotive number 21. The LTSR originally operated steam-driven tank engines, which it named after towns on the route. The first locomotives with numbers 1 to 36 introduced between 1880 and 1892. These were withdrawn from service between 1929-36. The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTSR) is a commuter railway line on the British railway system which connects London's Fenchurch Street station with destinations in east London and Essex. Its main users are London commuters but there are leisure travellers, as the line serves a number of seaside resorts. The route also includes freight traffic to and from the port of Tilbury. The railway was authorised in 1852 and the first section was opened in 1854 by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway Company. The main line runs from Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness via Basildon and Southend. A loop line between Barking and Pitsea provides an alternative route via Grays and Tilbury. It was electrified in stages from 1949. Passenger services are currently operated by train operating company c2c - an old Victorian/Edwardian photograph.
