On comparing this early work at Canterburywith other early INorman buildings, it is plain that theyall had their ornaments executed in the same manner:the chisel is only required for deep-cutting and espe-cially under-cutting, and that we do not find on anybuildings of ascertained date before 1120. The chiselwas used for carving in stone in Italy and the south ofFrance at an earlier period, but not in Normandy orthe north of France much earlier than in this usage was introduced, the workmen seem tohave gloried in it, and revelled in it, and the profusionof rich ]Sorman sculptured ornament in the latter halfof the twelfth century is quite wonde
