The next air receiver explosion of which there is a record is onewhich occurred at Miami, Florida, on December 28th. 1921. Thereceiver, the heads of which had been welded in. was used in con-nection with a gasoline engine driven compressor and failure was dueto the weakness of the welds. The compressor was in use on theconstruction of the First National Bank at Miami and. whereas nopersonal injuries were sustained, the engine and the compressor werebadly damaged and work on the building was delayed for a greatlength of time until repairs could be made. Soon after the last mentioned accident, another occurred in aparage at Greensboro, North Carolina. The receiver, in this case, was used for the storage of air at 200 lbs. pressure, the safety valvebeino- set to blow at 250 lbs. The heads were said to be connectedto the shell with a brazed joint and when leakage occurred at one of. 1922.] THE LOCOMOTIVE these joints someone rather foolishly attempted to close this leak witha caulking tool. After two or three blows of the hammer, the head ofthe tank blew out. The man who was attempting the repairs waskilled and his helper was badly injured. On February 24th of the present year the head on an air tankbelonging to The France Co. of Huntington, Ind., ruptured andthe manhole cover was driven through two floors and a side wall of the building. There is some mysteryabout the accident since it wasstated that the safety valve on thetank had been blowing freely forsome time when the hand on thepressure gauge was suddenly seento swing around as far as it couldgo. Before the pressure could bereduced the tank failed. At the plant of the DenverAuto Laundry Company, Denver,Colorado, an autogenously weldedair receiver exploded, on March 27th, causing considerable tank had been installed only the day before the accident.
