Mr. Young was elected as county Superintendentof schools at the first general election after the CivilWar, in November, 1865, over Henry C. Hopper, hisDemocratic opponent, and served one full term offour vears. He was the first to be elected with thetitle of county Superintendent of schools, the formertitle being- countv school Commissioner. He wasalso the first Republican ever elected in Williamsoncounty. As Superintendent of schools Mr. Young was veryfirm and conscientious in the discharge of his officialduties. He was especially strict in regard to themoral character of his teachers. He would not granta certificate until he had positive evidence that theapplicant was of good moral character, and he wouldquickly revoke the certificate of any of his teacherswhose moral conduct did not remain up to a highstandard.
