Early in the morning thebattle hegan both upon the western and theeastern hanks of the Tione. Upon the westernhank the Austrian reserve division, comingfrom Sandra at 7 oclock, met the vanguard ofthe Italian division Cerale and pushed it backupon Oliosi. Against this place the Austrianssoon sent an additional brigade of the Fifth corps(from S. Giorgio), while two other brigades ad-vanced upon S. Rocco. At 1 oclock p. m.,Cerale, bravely fighting, had to fall back beforeoverwhelming numbers toward Monte himself was wounded; one of the briga-diers, Villarey, killed. General Durando, thecommander of the First corps, tried to rally thedivision, but was likewise wounded. At twooclock the Austrians stormed the Monte Vento,and the division Cerale had to retreat to Va-leggio. The pursuit of the Austrians was partlydelayed by an advance of the division Pianellifr
