Damaged but vibrant late-1400s fresco painted and signed by German artist, Albert of Konstanz, in the Church of the Blessed Virgin and Saint George the Younger at Plomin, Istria, Croatia. Saints including John the Baptist and early Christian martyr brothers Cosmas and Damian surround a central Virgin Mary holding an apple as she suckles the baby Jesus.
Plomin, Istria, Croatia: The crowned Virgin Mary, flanked by angels and holding an apple, suckles the Christ Child in the centre of this damaged yet still vibrant fresco painted in the late 1400s by German artist, Albert of Konstanz, in the Church of the Blessed Virgin and Saint George the Younger, founded in 1474. Other saints depicted below painted arches in the side panels include (top left) a barefoot St John the Baptist and (lower panels) the saintly brothers Cosmas and Damian, who were arrested, tortured and executed by the Romans during the reign of Emperor Diocletian for refusing to renounce their faith. The artist is also known as Master Albert or Albertus de Constancia. His name appears (as Alberto de Constancia) in the Latin inscription beneath John the Baptist’s feet. The Byzantine-style fresco remained undiscovered for centuries, only coming to light in 1994, when a Baroque altar was removed from the eastern wall of the church for restoration.
