Subungual haematoma. Bruising under a man's cracked thumbnail following a crushing injury. The pooling of blood from ruptured blood vessels beneath the nail is called a subungual haematoma. This bruising causes discolouration of the skin. If necessary, haematomas may be lanced to drain the blood and relieve any pressure on surrounding tissues.
