Echocardiography. Male patient undergoes an echocardiography (ultrasound) test of his heart. The operator holds a transducer to the patient's chest, while an image of his heart is produced on the screen. Echocardiography is an ultrasound technique used to study the heart's structure and function by \bouncing\" high- frequency sound waves off it. The small transducer emits the sound waves and acts as a receiver for returning signals. The beating chambers of the heart may be visualized in this way, and the heart valves. Echocardiography is used in the diagnosis of heart disease (including congenital heart defects) and for monitoring heart therapy."
