Louis XVI-style, giltwood & upholstered armchair with, on back: Europe, wearing armor & plumed helmet, holds cornucopia & scepter, with papal tiara, mitre & crown laying at her side (R); attendant holds shield & banner; ewer & globe in foreground (L) & horseman in distance (L); on seat: cock standing on blue ball (L) as cow drinks from water in stone trough, goat standing beside drapery in foreground & 3 chickens (R), horse running in distance The upholstery on this armchair is part of a set of tapestries & upholstery alluding to the War of American Independence & the part played by the French in achieving it. It was woven by the order of King Louis XVI & probably intended as a gift to George Washington, though the Revolution prevented the transaction from materializing. This series comprises 4 panels, representing America, Europe, Africa & Asia, along with 28 covers, eventually mounted in 19th century frames, intended for the backs & seats of 2 settees & 12 armchairs. This set is the second of only 2 weavings. This armchair is 1 of 3 furniture pieces with upholstery representing Europe.
