Mechanics' magazine and register of inventions and improvements . o fu-migation whatever is accessary, or ever prac-tised by me. It is only in cases such asthose just enumerated that I have recourseto it: but in no case for the destruction ofbees. Fumigation, therefore, in my practiceis not suffocation. The following figure is a representation ofa fumigator, which a brief explanation .willrender intelliffible :. This useful article consists of a squaretop-board, upon Mich is placed a straw hive (E), so as to show an open circular spaceunder the hive and through the square boardinto the bag below. I need hardly observethat the straw hive is no part of the fumiga-tor, but is here represented as standing uponit in order to exemphfy its use. The top-board is of inch deal, and is nineteen ortwenty inches square. A round piece iscut out of its centre of not more than thir-teen inches in diameter—that being some-thing near to, or perhaps rather more than, the inside diameter of a common hive—sothat a hive will stand upon the wooden cir-cumference of the part left, without therebeing any ledge inside, that is, any part soinclosed by the hive as to catch and detainthe fuUing bees. From the upper edge ofthis circle is suspended a bag, a yard inlength, made of glazed calico, the bottompart of which draws round the rim of a shal-low, funnel-shaped, tin bee-receiver, whichbee-receiver is about ten inch
