Madonna and Child enthroned with Saints. Restored early 1300s detached fresco, displayed in inner courtyard of the medieval Castle of the Guidi Counts, or Castello dei Conti Guidi, at Poppi, Tuscany, Italy. The work is attributed to the artist who frescoed the castle’s chapel, Florentine painter and architect Taddeo Gaddi (c. 1290-1366). Gaddi was a member of the workshop of the influential Florentine artist Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267-1337) from 1313 to 1337 and was regarded by 1500s biographer Giorgio Vasari as Giotto’s most talented pupil.
Poppi, Tuscany, Italy: this restored early 14th century detached fresco, Madonna enthroned with Child and Saints, is displayed in the inner courtyard of the medieval Castello dei Conti Guidi and is attributed to the artist who frescoed the castle’s chapel, Florentine painter and architect Taddeo Gaddi (c. 1290-1366). Gaddi was a member of the workshop of the influential Florentine artist Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267-1337) from 1313 to 1337 and was regarded by 16th century biographer Giorgio Vasari as Giotto’s most talented pupil. The fortress was built in about 1274 for Count Simone di Battifolle, head of the powerful Guidi family, probably on the site of an earlier stronghold. Externally, it resembles Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio town hall, and it may have been used as a prototype for that 1299 design by master mason Arnolfo di Cambio. The castle buildings are still surrounded by a medieval curtain wall. The last Guidi Count, Francesco, surrendered the castle to the Florentine Republic in 1440.
