Great Gardens in Herrenhausen, Hannover Lower Saxony Germany


The Herrenhausen Gardens are located in Lower Saxony's capital of Hanover. Work on the Great Garden, the baroque centerpiece, began in 1666. It was laid out in its present form under Electress Sophie of Hannover between 1696 and 1714. The gardens are a heritage of the Kings of Hannover and they have always been one of the most distinguished baroque formal gardens of Europe. The gardens are considered popular recreation areas for the residents of Hannover. The history of the gardens spans several centuries, and they remain a popular attraction to this day.
