The unquiet spirit of the Bigods oncemore led them to rebel against tlieir sovereign ; and, in thereign of Henry the Third, this castle was demolished, nor isthere any account of its ever having been afterwards last earl of the family obtained a licence from Edwardthe First to embattle his mansion-house at Bungay, wherethere had been a castle ; and he principally resided at it,keeping two hundred and eighty-six acres of land, the halldykes or fisheries, a water mill, and many woods and fens,for the sole use of himself and his family. The walls of the building, believed to have been the keep,are very massive, and each floor within is now convertedinto a separate dwelling. No foundations remain visible bywhich the plan of the castle can be traced ; and the subjectof the annexed plate, with a few outworks, are all that re-main of this once-formidable
