Salt industry (Provence - France)

Founded in 1856 when a business was set up to produce salt in the area, Salin-de-Giraud was declared an autonomous commune in 2008, since when it is France’s seventh commune in terms of its area. The red-brick workers’ houses are a testament to the lives of those working in the salt industry until the middle of the twentieth century. The salt marshes play an important ecological rôle and are host to numerous species of plants and wildlife.
