National Ignition Facility (NIF). Computer artwork showing the layout of the target chamber of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, USA. This site is attempting to initiate and control hydrogen fusion as a sustainable energy source for future use. The beams from 192 lasers are focused onto a 2-millimetre-wide capsule of deuterium-tritium (DT) gas in the target chamber, with a total energy of megajoules. The first experiments were performed here in 2009, after more than a decade of construction.
