Liver abscess, gross specimen. A liver abscess is a pus-filled cavity surrounded by damaged and inflamed tissue. It may be caused by bacterial, fungal, or amoebic infection. If left untreated, a liver abscess could prove fatal. Treatment is of the root cause of infection, either with antibacterial or antifungal medication. Extreme cases are treated by surgical aspiration of the pus.
