Down's Syndrome foot. Sole of the foot of a Down's syndrome infant, showing abnormal skin creases. Down's syndrome is due to a chromosome defect, trisomy 21 - the presence of three number 21 chromosomes instead of the normal two. The main physical features are slanted eyes, a flat nose on a round head and abnormalities of the palms of hands & soles of feet. Mental attainment is usually restricted to that of a five year old child - that is, with an of between 50-60. Down's syndrome may be diagnosed antenatally by an amniocentesis test - removing a sample of amniotic fluid from the mother's womb for analysis.
