For two years he acted asprovost marshal general of the Department of theSouth, and performed the arduous duties of thatoffice most satisfactorily. After the war his promo-tion as brevet brigadier-general was confirmed bythe U. S. senate. At the close of the war his fatherurged him to return to his business, which had suf-fered by his absence, but he was appointed inspectorof customs, and subsequently assistant appraiser ofthe port of New York, and was also a member ofthe staff of Gov. Fenton of New York. Gen, Hallwas a deserving officer, and was possessed of brilliantcourage and remarkable energy. His personal traitsendeared him to a large circle of friends. He was Christian, an Episcopalian, a man of strongattachments and of large heart. He died Jan. 9,1884, leaving a widow and two
