Rocking Horse - Timeless Classics. Do you remember rocking madly on a rocking horse in your local playground as a child? Is the horse still there? Very probably not. Exaggerated fears about safety have seen a dramatic decline in horse numbers over the past two decades. Although these magnificent beasts are still produced it is now rare to see them in children's playgrounds. More good news of another local council who wisely ignored the doom-mongers who said their horse could not be repaired. Superior Parish Council in Cheshire found an excellent local contractor who did a great job of restoration. A nostalgic find at The Museum of Lincolnshire Life - a 5 person rocking horse made of cast iron and wood. There used to be one just like this on Bardney playing fields in the 1960s, most likely removed for 'health & safety' reasons. The widespread public concern in Britain over childhood injuries arising from playground accidents is examined using a new national data base on leisure accidents managed by the Department of Trade and Industry. Popular beliefs about the level of risk, the nature and cause of injury, and remedial measures are found to be unsupported by the analysis. Playground risks are comparatively low; accident causes are diverse and most involve long bone injuries and not head injuries as has been widely reported.
