The gaskets are so placed in the head thatneither is touched by tlie opposite one until thecou]3ling is made. This protection is effected bya tongue ^nd groove, on which tongue the facerides until the gaskets are in position to register, when the tongue drops into the Elevation Fig. Air and Steam Coupler. The outer end of the coupling head, having ^^ Vand wedge-shape guides, is directed both verti-cally and horizontally by the outwardly bentspring on the opposing members. This coupling-spring performs the double function of guide andclamp to hold the head firmly together whencoupled. As will be seen on the elevation views, the headsare tapped to receive the air pipes to which con-nection is made to the train and signal pipes by ashort hose. The steam attachment is so arraneed that it can LOCOMOTIVE APPLIANCES. 559 be readily removed or attaclied without affectingthe air connections. An automatic drip at thelowest point of the steam attachment provides forall condensation. As will be seen on the plan views, the slottedhanger is provided with a spring buffer which pos-itively insures the air coupling under all condi-tions where the car couplers mil operate, andwhich maintains the coupling point of the aircoupler in advance of the car coup
