An early woodcut engraving portrait of John Gower,( c. 1330 – 1408). He was a personal friend of Geoffrey Chaucer and a contemporary of William Langland and the unidentified poet known as the Gawain Poet or Pearl Poet who wrote Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Gowers three main works were the Mirour de l'Omme, Vox Clamantis, and Confessio Amantis. Whilst walking by the Thames he is said to have come across the Royal Yacht and was invited aboard by King Richard II.
