The Tarquinians, however, remained in arms,and a painful impression was produced at Rome by the newsthat the ancient city of Caere, where the Roman Vestals hadfound a refuge during the terror of the first GauHsh invasion,had gone over to the enemy. But the Caerites soon repentedof their defection, and entered into a truce with Rome for ahundred years (353 ) ; and a systematic ravage of theTarquinian territory at length broke the resolution of theseobstinate foes.
