Parish stocks kept in the porch of St Menefreda's Church, St Minver, Cornwall, England, UK. Hinged boards fasten around the ankles of wrongdoers: a form of corporal punishment and restraint exposing them to public humiliation such as feet tickling. These stocks are Medieval, dating from around 1400. They were last used at the end of the C19th when the Vicar lent them to punish two boys caught stealing from an orchard. Their fathers gave consent for the boys to be in the stocks for three hours in order to avoid paying a fine at the Petty Sessions. Stocks are mentioned in the Bible & Greek sources, and their use in England has never been formally abolished.
