Salisbury Cathedral, South-East view
Salisbury Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is located in the Diocese of Salisbury. The cathedral was founded by Bishop Richard Poore in 1220 and finished in 1258. It was built on the Salisbury Water Meadows, and replaced a Norman Cathedral built at Old Sarum between 1075 and 1090. Salisbury Cathedral has the tallest spire in England (123 m / 404 ft), the largest cloisters and the largest cathedral close in Britain (32 ha / 80 acres). It also contains Europe’s oldest working clock, now situated in the north nave aisle. The picture was drawn by J. Archer and engraved by Benjamin Winkles.
