Belchite became the focus of attention for both the National Army and the Republiic during the Spanish Civil war. The town changed hands several times after heavy fighting and many casualties on both sides. After the end of the war Franco ordered that the town not be rebuilt, but instead be left as a monument to the war. Today it stands much as it was left, although the passage of time continues to erode the buildings further.
