An 1842 portrait of Josef Staudigl Kriehuber (the elder ,1800-1876), Austrian bass singer, musical tutor & opera performer. Originally a novice in the Benedictine monastery of Stift Melk, he went to study surgery in Vienna & began to sing to earn himself some money. His talent was recognised and he began singing for the Wiener Hofoper (Vienna state opera). In 1831 he became a court singer (Hofkapellsänger). By the 1840's he was at Covent Garden, & became internationally esteemed. Some time after 1856 he became mentally ill & was admitted to the National Lunatic asylum Vienna where he died.
