Foot muscles. Computer artwork of a view looking down on some of the muscles and tendons (red and white) of the upper surface of the foot. Shown in both views are the extensor hallucis brevis muscle and the extensor digitorum brevis muscles, used to extend (straighten) the big toe and the three middle toes. The view at right also shows a semi-transparent view of tendon extensions reaching further down the toes to the final set of phalanges, as well as some of the ligaments (white). The ligaments most clearly seen are the strap-like ones of the ankle running across the base of the tibia.
