Tree roots engulf temple ruins at Sambor Prei Kuk, not far from Angkor Wat in Cambodia

The temples of Sambor Prei Kuk, 17 miles from Kompong Thom, were part of the pre-Angkorian capital of Isanapura, which was the first major temple city in Southeast Asia. The temples, built by King Eysanvaraman I, are a combination of volcanic rock bricks and carved sandstone and date back to the sixth through ninth centuries. They were Hindu, not Buddhist, as many later temples were. The temple complex is divided into three areas.
