The Church, when the Priory was dissolved, stood on thesouth side of the monastic buildings : the Cloister occupiedthat part of the ground on the north of the nave : the re-fectory, chapter house and dormitories, and other buildingsstood about the Cloister: an embankment kept off theThames at high tide: on the west side was St. Mary ST. MARY OVKRIES 205 Overies Dock, which was also the south end of the dock is there still, but where the wall of the Monasterystood, round the Garden, and one could see the orchardsbeyond, are now huge warehouses. Some remains of theCloister stood until recently, and one gateway of the precinct-—there was certainly another on the side of the High Street—stood close to the west front of the Church. The Cloisterreceived the name of Montagu Close, after the son of SirThomas Brown who became Viscount Montagu
