James Buchanan Eads The celebrated engineer, James Buchanan Eads, wasborn in Laurenceburg, Indiana, in 1820. At the age of twenty-two he constructed a diving-bellboat, and subsequently built several boats for raising largesteamers. In 1845, ne erected the first glass works west ofthe Mississippi. In 1861, he built eight ironclads in onehundred days—these steamers were employed in the captureof Fort Henry, in 1862. In seven years he was engaged in the construction of 384 mm <•.-.*. :-.
