St George in-the-East, Stepney. East end and apse; built by Nicholas Hawksmoor 1714 - 1729
St GeorgeÐin-the-East. Church in Stepney, in the East End of London. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches'. Built by Nicholas Hawksmoor, 1714 to 1729. St George's was hit by incendiary bombs in May 1941, when the interior was destroyed, and only the walls and the tower left standing. St George's stands in a large open space, as the Commissioners for the Fifty New Churches intended. The east end has a projecting apse and a large pediment; beyond is the tower, flanked by 'pepper-pot' staircase turrets.
