Vu Thi Lam and her husband Dam Viet Thuoc have three lively and intelligent daughters. The eldest, 16, is a normal self-conscious teenager. She was too shy to be photographed. Her younger sisters Lien, 8, and Hien, 6 did not object to such attention. They were born after Dam Viet Thuoc went South and was sprayed, and neither have lenses in their eyes. 18 During the Vietnam War chemical defoliants were used by the US military to clear forests on a massive scale. Between 1962 and 1969, 11 million gallons of Agent Orange, the most commonly used defoliant, were dropped onto 16% of the total forested area of Vietnam. Extremely toxic Dioxin, contained in Agent Orange, has caused widespread cancer, heart disease and appalling birth defects.
